Easy ways to boost your curb appeal…this weekend!

When home sellers think about improving curb appeal, it can be easy to get overwhelmed. New exterior paint? New landscaping and sod? New driveway? Sounds exhausting and expensive.

But it doesn’t have to be!

If you’re planning to sell your home in the near future but worry about the time and expense of enhancing your curb appeal, there are plenty of easy ways to spruce it up—without breaking the bank.

Here are six easy curb appeal enhancements you can knock out this weekend with a trip to the home improvement store:

1.) Pressure wash your exterior. For some jobs, a water hose just won’t do. Be sure to spray all surfaces including the eaves and driveway; just avoid easily damaged areas like caulking around doors and windows as well as roof shingles. Don’t forget to wash the fence as well! You will be shocked at how much a good washing can make your home sparkle. Home Depot rents out electric pressure washers for just $38 per day.

2.) Clean the windows. As with the exterior, it’s easy to underestimate just how grimy our windows can become over time. Giving them a good cleaning inside and out can make a big difference. No need for expensive window cleaners; just create a mix of detergent diluted in warm water.

3.) Paint accent areas. It is a huge undertaking to paint the entire exterior. Instead, just paint the trim, shutters and/or front door to freshen up the exterior. You may want to use the existing color or change it up and use a new color that will complement your home’s base color. If you opt for the latter, be sure to check with your HOA first as it might require approval to change any colors.

4.) Update exterior accessories. Shabby and out-of-date fixtures and accessories can detract from an otherwise striking exterior. Head down to the home improvement store and pick out a new mailbox, porchlight, doorknob or even house numbers.

If you don’t want to buy new, you may opt to spray paint them to give a brand-new look. There are beautiful colors available in spray paint (just make sure the spray paint is formulated to adhere to the surface you are painting!)

5.) Add window planters. Planter boxes are easy to install, come in a ton of designs and are fairly inexpensive at home improvement stores. Best of all, once you add a few of your favorite flowers, window planters add a surprising amount of charm to any home.

6.) Let there be light! As with interior lighting, your outside lights can be a huge factor for house hunters. Brighten up your porch with a larger hanging porchlight or a couple sconces on each side of the front door. Or, buy and easily install low-voltage landscape lighting, which can illuminate trees, the house or your walking path. Unable to use lights that require wiring? There are solar options that work quite well.

Finish your spruce-up with a new door wreath, a few potted plants and doormat, and your home will be irresistible to potential homebuyers!
