This month’s spotlight is on Joel Barrett with the Horizons Pest Control. This family owned business that was founded in 2008 in south Florida, and now operate exclusively in North Florida. We caught up with Joel to learn more about him and the Horizons Pest Control business.

 

 

 

 

 

Tell us a bit about your service:

Horizons Pest Control is a privately owned pest control company offering both residential and commercial services. We specialize in outdoor pest control, weed and insect control, ornamental and Palm tree fertilization.

 

 

We are a family owned business that was founded in 2008 in south Florida, and now operate exclusively in North Florida.

 

Your home or business is traditionally your largest investment, and we are here to provide you with the most effective solutions for whatever pest problems, or lawn conditions you may encounter.

 

With a passion for the work and a heart for helping people, I pride myself in providing professional, courteous and personal services to every one of my customers. Most importantly, for your protection, I am licensed and insured.

 

Are you a Florida Native?

Here’s a fun fact about that. Native Pennsylvanians, which is where I was born, make up 4% of all current Floridians. While not a native, I’ve lived here most of my life and enjoy everything the state has to offer.

 

What made you want to pursue this business?

I was raised in farm country, and really enjoyed the outdoors. While farming wasn’t in my future, golf certainly was. I was on my high school team, which eventually led me to pursue a degree from Penn State in Golf course management. The experience of being a Golf course Superintendent, along with my formal education in plant science, turf grass science, landscaping, horticulture and recreation management made it an easy transition to start a business in the pest control and fertilization industry.

 

 

What business advice would you give your younger self?

I would advise my younger self to not feel like you need to go it alone. Reach out to other businesspeople in your industry to look for guidance and advice. Find an accountability partner who will mentor you.

 

What’s a good tip for a 1st time homeowner?

Buying your first home is quite an accomplishment. Just like my business advice, don’t do it alone. Hire a licensed professional to find your dream home. Because of my experience I know that updates to the exterior of a home can add up just as quickly as the interior. If you aren’t looking to spend much more on the details once you’ve found a home, look for a property that already has the amenities and the landscaping that you want.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Well, I’m still a golfer and what better place to have this as a hobby than being in Florida. I enjoy music, especially live concert events, sports and traveling with my family.
